What it's like.....

at a  York Young Fiddlers Workshop:

bullet

We all turn up at the Steiner school looking forward to learning new tunes

bullet

We meet each other and the tutors who divide us up into ability groups.

Then we go off to learn some tunes - we do it slowly, bit by bit. We don't just learn the notes but also the rhythm and how to use the bow in traditional playing. We learn about the different styles of tunes, playing in different regions and how to recognise where a tune comes from by how it sounds and how it's played.

bullet

Gradually we put the tune together - we do it mostly by ear, but if it's a bit difficult there is usually some music to have a look at if it helps.

bullet

We have breaks in between the tune learning to get to know each other better and have snacks or food.

bullet

At the end we put it all together and play through our new tunes for our families when they come to pick us up....they usually can't believe what they hear!....
