About York Young Fiddlers

York Young Fiddlers began life officially after a meeting at the Lighthorseman pub on Fulford Road on 14th February 2006. A fiddle group for children and young people had been going for couple of  years before that in a collaboration between local parents and fiddle enthusiasts and Yorkshire Dales Workshops.

The inspiration behind the initial collaboration with Yorkshire Dales Workshops and the subsequent formation of York Young Fiddlers was Tatjana Neupert. Her vision of a community based fiddle group for children and young people combined with her hard work have led to the thriving group we have now. Howarth based fiddler Robin Shepherd supported the project from the beginning and local musicians Maggie Allred and Kate Earl gave vital musical assistance at the events.

The group meets about every 6-8 weeks to have either a Saturday afternoon workshop or a longer event over a whole day or weekend. From time to time we invite a guest tutor to work with us - always someone whose fiddling is highly respected in the world of traditional music and who works well with children and young people. We have plans for more performances  in public as our repertoire enlarges.

YYF is organised by a core group of musicians and parents and we welcome any child or young person who would like to learn fiddle playing with us.
